Good discussion of audiophile concerns. I believe there to be a "cutoff point" where one should wisely spend up to a certain amount for hi fi equipment, but then faces diminishing returns for further dollars spent.
The Musical Fidelity X-DAC (bought used from Audio Advisor for $199) really "analoged" my system's digital sound - it also has an HDCD decoder.
I still read a lot about audiophile recordings on labels like Audioquest that utilize Ampex tape recorders & tape. Purist stuff.
IMO, Ampex under Ed Bramson has really blown the opportunity to capitalize on a revered name in any number of directions. (Part of the reason I wish to see EB gone).
