Ted even by your definition there are alternatives to oil. You have a choice between two or more things. One of the choice may be stupid but it is not impossible.

But for the sake of argument lets say we agree that there is no choice because the oil is so much cheaper.
Then when the oil is no longer cheaper we will have a alternative. So an alternative will appear unless you are arguing that oil will never get significantly more expensive then it is now. If that is what you are arguing then I would suggest 1 - That you are wrong, and 2 - If you are right it means oil will never run out so we don't have to worry.
