They are too expensive because oil is cheap. If oil gets expensive enough then they will be used even if they do not become any cheaper. Therefore we will have an alternative by definition. I even used your definition.

You can call them alternatives if you want but unless something has changed significantly in the past 6 mos., the cost differentials between them and oil are significant, not just a few pennies.

So in my view of the world, they are not viable alternatives like choosing between a ford or a toyota or a hyundai.
