Applied Materials (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news) executives said on a conference call on Tuesday to discuss its fiscal first-quarter results that second-quarter earnings per share will be between 32 cents a share and 37 cents a share.

Sales are expected to fall from first-quarter levels and will be $1.9 billion to $2.0 billion, Applied Materials said.

Analysts now expect Applied Materials to earn 49 cents a share, the consensus forecast as compiled by First Call/Thomson Financial. Second-quarter sales were forecast to be $2.42 billion.

Operating margin, Applied Materials said, will be greater than 20 percent in the second quarter
