Russian commercial banks exported 70 tonnes of gold in 2000
BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom; Feb 13, 2001
Text of report in English by Russian news agency Interfax

Moscow, 12 February: Russian commercial banks exported 70 tonnes of gold in 2000, head of the precious metals committee of the Association of Russian Banks, Sergey Kashub, told Interfax.

Commercial banks exported around 15 tonnes in 1999, he said, adding that such a low amount was due to the introduction of a 5 per cent precious metal export duty. "From the moment the duty was introduced in April until it was lifted in October, banks exported just 300 kilograms of gold," Kashub said.

Commercial banks signed around 700 contracts to acquire about 100 tonnes of gold in 2000.

Russia produced 143 tonnes of gold in 2000, up 13.2 per cent year-on-year. It plans to produce at least 146 tonnes in 2001.

It must be worth more to those who toil to dig it than steal it.
