there is nothing inherent in the Pentium 4 design which causes it to yield poorly

I am not sure you are correct there. Remember the P4 has internal logic switching at 3 GHz. Intel have been doing presentations about the challenges of getting that kind of performance from .18 transistors, and no doubt they have done a great job in getting it to work. Remember, Scumbria didn't think it was possible at all on a .18 process.

So, we know
- it was difficult to pull off, but they managed it
- P4 is currently shipping at 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and not the 1.4, 1.5, 1.7 we were expecting. Noone ever expected a 1.3 GHz P4.

My guess is there is something inherent in the P4 design causing it to yield badly.
