Well said and I agree.

I see this "you're limiting my freedom of speech" issue as rather silly in this case.

I've got a sick daughter here and my connection to SI is running at a stunning 300 bps, so I'll say goodnight.

Most people have an inherent sense of fairness and resent when they are treated unfairly. That is really the point.

>>The whole flap about moderated threads defies my comprehension. Some conversation is public and some is private. Freedom of speech, whether by liberal or conservative definition, does not entitle anyone to force their way into a private conversation<<

One slight, but obvious problem with your reasoning about private vs. public conversation. All of the messages posted in this forum UNLESS done via PM are PUBLIC.

So the problem with "moderating" threads is that such could possibly degenerate into to nothing more than a public venue to attack groups, ideas, or individuals unimpeded. Fortunately, thus far I don't believe we've seen this forum used to that extreme.

I would like to hear more of (the former) SI Bob's ideas on this subject. I know he had some reservations about how the moderation function was being applied.
