JC,

I have been one of the big believers in LDT, but I am really pleasantly surprised by the press release. (Actually, a press release with a working product would beat it, but that's a separate question). The list of names is impressive:
- Cisco
- Sun
- Microsoft
- Broadcom
- NVidia
plus Via and ATI. All we need from the big ones is a direct support from ServerWorks (not just the parent), HP and IBM, and from the second tier, Micron, Ali, SIS, 3Com etc.

Sun's endorsement seemed a little cautious, and I guess it has to do that their UltraSparc may one day compete with SledgeHammer, but I am sure for Sun, the enemy of their enemy (Intel) is their friend.

Joe

JC,

I found this part very interesting:

"HyperTransport technology is planned to enhance overall system performance of AMD platforms, from desktops to servers," said David W.
Williams, director of Windows® Hardware Strategy at Microsoft.

Curious that Microsoft didn't say, "of PC platforms". They word these statements very carefully, and I think the above wording from Microsoft could be very significant. Intel may not be getting a Hypertransport license, and I think the chances of seeing Windows on Sledge just got better.

Pravin.

JC, I agree with your assessment of LDT, errr, hyper-whatever. AGP was lousy technology but Intel chipsets implemented it flawlessly, giving an extra speed-grade edge over AMD. Worse than that, incompatibility problems with VIA/AGP left a bad taste in many mouths.

I believe Intel will get an LDT licencse, but be kept out of the consortium. Intel products will have compatibility and/or performance problems with LDT as it evolves. (remember AGP 1X, then 2X, then 4X, with VIA/ALi=AMD always one step behind?)
