Lyndon Johnson's war on poverty didnt work as evidenced by 1 trillion dollars spent fighting it and there are more poor now than before. Where did the 1 trillion go ? Most of it in increasing the size of government.
We will never end poverty !!! Poverty is a way of life. It is a life style that people willingly embrace. When people quit high school. When teen age girls get pregnant without a husband. When people choose drugs they guarantee poverty. It is a choice. Not Bill CLinton nor Carl Marx nor Ronald Reagan nor Jesus Christ ended poverty. No one will ever end poverty.

Dear Rich4eagle: Well, I guess poverty is something that will always be around. I think its more a HUMAN condition then an economic one. There are so many examples in America of poor doing exceptionally well if they wish I think its fair to say that in general, if one is poor and stays poor its because they do not wish to expend the effort to rise to the next level. What is the alternative, give everyone enough money so as to be able to say they are all not poor? How long do you think they would hang on to it?? What effect do you think it would have on those working if those not working were HANDED a gift? Where do you think that would lead our Country? Do you think it would even slow down crime?
As to our Defense, in reality the MAIN REASON to even have a NATIONAL govt is to provide for the SECURITY of the Nation. If we cant do that, we have no need for FEDERALISM. So, its pretty basic IMHO. From what I read it appears to me that the nature of our defense will change. Instead of fancy high priced delivery systems we will build fast strike, potent ground forces to handle problems not coming from highly industrial nations. However, with the spread of all kinds of very potent weapons of mass destruction it seems to me some type of missle defense is indeed needed. Remember, someone such as Saddam who supposedly has little value of human life could take just ONE missle and threaten say NYC and possibly cause us to BLINK. I guess what I am saying you have to have a cohesive all enveloping stratagy and missle defense is just one part of the wheel. Bush has ordered a complete evaluation of the entire system before employing vast new sums of money. Sounds pretty responsible to me. JDN
