Dear Jack: To make a statement like this in relation to SANS, "EMC is a storage commodity player... good luck "
certainly indicates one of us needs to do some homework. I guess time will tell which. (gg) JDN

They have an architecture that is confusing - Clarion , Celerra, Symmetrix

Confusing only to one-size-fits-all types. LOL.

Symmetrix is a high-end core storage system. Celerra is a high-end edge storage system. Symmetrix has 21 storage applications from EMC and more than 25 storage applications from other software companies.

Clariion is a mid-range storage system with convertible SAN and NAS configurations. Clariion has more than 12 storage software applications from EMC.

When customers don't have any money to spend, there is alternate vendor, that is NTAP

For mid-range edge NAS, EMC's IP4700 is at least 20% cheaper than NTAP's F840. Furthermore, to achieve the same level of high availability as the IP4700, you have to cluster 2 F840s or 2 boxes.

EMC is a storage commodity player

Most Recent Quarter

Sales:

EMC - $2.6B*
NTAP- $288M

EMC grew sales 15% from 3Q00 to 4Q00 while NTAP grew sales 10% from 2Q01 to 3Q01 despite the fact that EMC is more than 9x bigger than NTAP!

Software revenues:

EMC Software - $483M (annualized: $1.9B)
NTAP Software - $49M (annualized: $196M)

Number of Software applications:

EMC (59)

From EMC - 34 storage applications for Symmetrix/Clariion
From other vendors* - 25 storage applications for Symmetrix/Clariion

* 90 software companies participating in EMC's open API program.

NTAP (8)

From NTAP - 8 storage applications for filers/cache

Don't you NTAP partisans ever get tired of losing arguments based on the facts?
