[World DRAM Price] DRAM Prices Slump as Makers of DIMMs Engage in Dumping
February 14, 2001 (TOKYO) -- The latest world DRAM price survey by ICIS-LOR showed that the moving average prices of 128Mb DRAMs (PC133, 16Mb x 8) for large users during the 30-day period from Dec. 28, 2000 to Jan. 26, 2001, were US$9.50 in North America, US$6.64 in Europe and US$6.70 in Asia.

ICIS-LOR is based in London, Houston and Singapore.

Compared with the equivalents during the previous 30-day period, ending Jan. 19, the prices declined by 7.05 percent in North America, 4.35 percent in Europe and 1.37 percent in Asia.

For memory modules, the spot price of 128MB DIMMs (PC133) dropped 1.00 percent to US$43.50 in North America, declined 1.39 percent to US$44.94 in Europe and fell 0.26 percent to US$41.63 in Asia.

It's become almost an annual event that the prices are dampened in late February, when Micron Technology Inc. of the United States dumps DRAMs in the market, facing the end of its fiscal term.

Additionally, some other makers have jumped ahead of Micron in slashing prices this year, accelerating the decline in prices.

These makers are selling their products by the module and not by the chip, pulling the daily price of 128MB DIMMs, for example, down as low as about US$41. Although 128MB-pre-installed models are now the mainstream of PCs on sale, items with 256MB memory are likely to be sold no later than the spring due to further price declines.
