KULIM, Malaysia--Silicon foundry startup Silterra Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. today (Feb. 14) announced production of "high yielding" product wafers using a 0.22-micron CMOS technology. The wafers were delivered to an unidentified strategic customer in January, according to Silterra.

Earier in January, Silterra shipped its first processed wafers to a customer using a 0.25-micron CMOS process, called CMOS25. On the eight-inch wafers were complex ICs, measuring 210-square millimeters with five layers of metal interconnect, said the foundry company, which has licensed its initial processes from LSI Logic Corp.

"We went from equipment qualification to delivering working products to our first two customers in just two months," said Cy Hannon, CEO of Silterra. "We have demonstrated our ability to deliver leading-edge products to customers in record time."

The company said it is now offering 0.25-, 0.22-, and 0.18-micron process technologies to foundry customers. More advanced technologies and radio-frequency (RF) chip capabilities will also be available in the future, Silterra said.

Silterra is one of two Malaysian foundry startups ramping production in the first quarter of 2001. On the Island of Borneo, 1st Silicon (Malaysia) Sdn. is preparing to hold its official opening ceremony for its 8-inch fab in Kuching next week.
