Mary, Re: What I don't understand is why Barrett does not recognise that marketing and IR require a different skill set and that Intel does not have anyone possessing the requisite skills to manage marketing and IR

In what way do you think Intel's marketing is not good ? For IR, I believe Intel's attitude is "we don't give a damn" so it is not they don't recognize but they put almost no attention to it, intentionally.

mary, re: People can and virtually say anything they want and get away with it.

Sell-side analysts are supposed to adhere to certain regulatory standards, including some below. The problem is there can be a dispute as to what truthfulness, material, false, misleading, reasonable, etc., mean.

The fact that a report gets published implies that it has been given the okay for release and thus meets standards of truthfulness and good taste and that it does not contain any untrue statements, omit any material fact, or is false or misleading. Recommendations must have a reasonable basis and supporting information must be provided or be offered.

Mary - Re: "Intel was never very good at marketing and IR. They were lucky in that they had the right product at the right time"

You are demonstrating a severe lack of knowledge and appreciation of Intel's history.
