The IBM support deal has been in the works for years and is a major big-deal. IBM support is without parallel in my experience. They are lacking in a great many areas, as are many large organizations, but they use that size to their advantage in providing onsite and offsite support. This is an area(the area, IMHO) NTAP is lacking, as is often the case as a company grows into their potential. I can give you the total headcount in a large city considered a remote site by NTAP: EMC 250 ; NTAP 1. Clearly different products with different support requirements, plus the relative size of the organizations, but if you want in the enterprise there is a "presence" requirement. IBM can fill this role.

Well with NTAP's pop today I closed my last ST position - short some very ST poots. Maybe coulda made more, but just no time to recover if the price fell again.

I would put very, very little faith in this "agreement".

I am very familiar with IBM Global Services...IMHO, their primary job is to charge their customers as much as they can for their "services", while providing as little actual support as possible, and simultaneously generating sufficient documentation to protect themselves against any legal claims that they are in any way at fault for any problem which may occur. If any actual work happens to pop out the back end of the process, that's considered a happy side-benefit.

Their OTHER job is to get IBM equipment into the datacenters with which they're involved.

In my work world, we have already been told that we will have to justify why we don't want to use IBM gear when we're requesting new hardware. If we can't support our claims to IBM's satisfaction, it's "goodbye Sun/HP/whaterver, HELLOOO Big Blue!" (Actually, their boxes are black, but that's besides the point...)

"Gee, Steve, tell us how you really feel about it!"

Don't get me started...
