Yes it is a myth and separation of church and state is equally mythical to the people you seek to help.

Take Algeria for example. A fundamentalist party was elected and the ruling non-fundamentalist party disallowed the election. The general will of those people was fundamentalist and they elected a fundamentalist government. Now roving bands of fundamentalists are going around happily killing people right left and center.

If you try and impose western values on these people you will cause greater suffering than what already exists. The west suffers not from moral superiority when it intervenes, it suffers from abominable conceit. Kind of like an Auntie Karen personality who wants to turn the whole world into a big drawing room where people go around spouting politically correct and sensitive phrases.

It's a good thing to feed hungry people but if you want to impose more than a cup of rice on them you're going need guns to back it up.
