Pretty hard to fast-forward or skip accurately without a linear tracking table or getting off the couch. <<<< I don't know if I agree. Keep in mind that most of the sessions of old were done cheaply and quickly.Albums were considered quick knockoffs, they did not usually include the actual 45s in them. Elvis first album didn't include Heartbreak Hotel or the followup, Hound Dog. Gene Vincent's first album did not include "Bebopalula". No one really expected albums to sell as big as the singles back then. That's probably why they're good. No one cared. Now you have committees of corporate drones who "care". I think the main preoccupation today is with "pushing the envelope" of good taste a little lower than last month (correlates directly with the Yahoo Ampex board). They're not after anyone over 20 anymore, they've written them off. They're after the 7 years old now. And, by golly, they've got them. It's really more closely aligned to the porn industry now, than to the music industry. I find it interesting that a creep like "Snoop Doggy Dog" can do a song like "COP KILLER", and then advocate the abolition of copyrights (via Napster usage), and ultimately wind up with a leading role on the TV series LAW AND ORDER-Special Victims Unit, as a COP, no less...(not sure it was snoop doogy dog. As far as I'm concerned, that's what all of the rappers are called. Dog something this.) With all the multi tracking and dubbing capabilities now (as well as pitch control for bad singers, etc), you think they could do it right. But let's say they spend a hundred thousand dollars to record one Brittany Spears track, which is probably way below the mark. I doubt if Sam Phillips spent that much in recording every act on the SUN label in 1956 abd 1957, combined. A typical Buddy Holly session might cost about 300 hundred dollars. (Norman Petty charged by the song, not by the hour). Let's look at one of the bigger budget artists, like Roy Orbison. They'd record 4 songs in 3 hours, from start to finish. Then they'd bring in the strings for an overdub, although I think Roy actually sang with the strings present in a lot of cases. So what would the session that yielded "CRYING", "CandyMan", and Love Hurts Cost? Most likely around 3 grand, tops. Back when the country had "character", the music had "character". When we lost our character, thanks to Vietnam, Nixon, Iran Contra, and a bunch of other things, the music lost it's character. Apparently, that's a done deal. Sorry kids, we used up all the good music..We are all devo.......al PS. To be fair, I really enjoy the albums issued by Mark Knopfler and a few others. There is still some good stuff coming out, but I think the record companies would rather go for the crotch, rather than the heart. Grab yourself, and be a star....Look at the shows on MTV now "Porn to Music", Extreme videos, Jackass, that creep from Canada with the poopoo on the michrophone. I would shut MTV down for pandering obscenity to children. Ah, but that might affect COMMERCE. That's untouchable. That's sacred. And protected... .I'm quite tempted to rip out my satellite, it's quite unsettling...
