The Alcatel 1000 MM Multimedia Multiservices switch, that will be delivered 1Q 2001, is able to handle a capacity of 8000 PCMs. This will allow TD to face extremely rapid growth of the traffic carried across its network (fixed, mobile and internet). Gérard Dega, Alcatel's President for France mentions : "By providing to Télécom Développement this new generation of High Capacity Switches, Alcatel will confirm their commitment to Télécom Développement, in their partnership to face the growth of the traffic and the switching of the new generation of media (voice, data, video...)". The commissioning of the Alcatel 1000 MM will significantly raise TD network's capacity and will reduce drastically their costs in network engineering and operating systems (OPEX). The new Alcatel 1000 MM will be able to manage the traffic that previously required four switches. This is one significant step on the ladder of TD's network towards VoATM and Next Generation Networks (NGN). Denis Manteau, General Manager, Network and Operations, of Télécom Développement adds : "Our network is growing so fast that we need very high capacity switches, this is cost efficient and simplifies the network architecture". This order is part of a contract in which Alcatel will install three high capacity switches Alcatel 1000 MM, of 8000 PCMs each, during 2001 and will start extension of TD Alcatel 1000 MM installed based (2000 PCMs) to higher capacity switch (8000 PCMs). About Alcatel 1000 MM Multimedia Multiservices The Alcatel 1000 MM system is a multimedia multiservice switching system, employing a core of "packet" technology and broadband interfaces. It is a part of the Alcatel product suite for Next Generation Networks (NGN). It allows operators to offer voice services as well as multimedia services and Internet access. It will also be part of the third generation (3G) mobile networks infrastructure, and will offer before the end of this year even higher capacity at up to 16,000 PCMs. The Alcatel 1000 systems are present in more than 130 countries and total more than 280 million terminations. About Télécom Développement (TD) Télécom Développement (TD) designs, deploys and operates the only alternative long-distance nationwide digital telecommunications network in France, based for the most part on its own infrastructure. Its nationwide transmission network consisted of almost 18,000 km of optical cables at the end of 2000. It is organised in protected rings using synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) and WDM technology. The switching sites are located in the Paris and Lyon regions. TD is licensed both as a network operator and a provider of telephony services, using the prefix "7" for this purpose. TD's main products-switched minutes and leased lines - are offered to the public through Cegetel, which markets them to the general public and to businesses through the company Cegetel Fixe, in which TD has a 20% stake. The marketing of services to other operators is done directly by TD itself. All telecoms operators may call upon TD to carry their traffic within France or to other countries.
