TELUS Reports Strong Fourth Quarter,Revenue increases 18% led by wireless and Internet growth

newswire.ca

BURNABY, BC, Feb. 14 /CNW/ - TELUS Corporation (TSE: T and T.A / NYSE:
TU) reported strong revenue growth in the fourth quarter of 18% compared to
the same quarter a year ago and positive operating results today. These
financial statements are the first to consolidate the results of Clearnet
Communications Inc. (Clearnet), from the date of its acquisition on October
20, 2000.
"These results reflect the new growth profile of TELUS consistent with
our strategy for national growth that exploits the convergence of data, IP,
voice and mobility," declared Darren Entwistle, president and CEO. "We have
had a successful quarter as we moved quickly to close the largest
telecommunications acquisition in Canadian history within the accelerated time
frame we committed. The strong fourth quarter wireless results reflect the
progress made to integrate Clearnet into the new TELUS Mobility and to exploit
our new national leadership position in the Canadian wireless market.
Furthermore, at year-end we launched our new customer facing business unit
structure with executives positioned across Canada."
"We are pleased with a solid quarter that generated healthy growth on top
line financial and operating measures," stated Robert McFarlane, executive
vice president and CFO. "The fourth quarter bottom line results reflect the
planned additional financing costs and negative EBITDA from the acquisition of
Clearnet and our initiative to increase digital wireless subscribers in
western Canada. It is also important to note that we met or exceeded the
financial targets we publicly provided and updated during the year. Targets
for 2000 included revenue growth (8-9%), EBITDA growth (4-6%), and capital
expenditures ($1.5 billion)."
