Cape Town is really great...and so is Durban, although i hear crime has increased to intolerable levels there as well lately. Johannesburg is of course the world capital of crime...i remember when on a single weekend in '96 a record 44 people were killed in the Hillbrow district alone, which is an incredibly small geographical area (essentially a few blocks in every direction); it is however also one of the most densely populated areas on earth.

so for prospective visitors of SA, i'd avoid Jo'burg...aside from the crime the country is beautiful though, and well worth a visit. oh, when in Durban, don't go into murky water. Zambezi sharks are known to attack in knee-deep water and quite a few people have left an arm or a leg in Durban involuntarily...
