Ex-CIA chief was in reported plea deal

WASHINGTON - The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has begun an inquiry into Bill Clinton's pardon of former CIA director John M. Deutch, sending a letter Wednesday to current agency director George J. Tenet asking whether he had been consulted on the pardon or had any prior knowledge of it.

The former president's pardon undercut a plea agreement that Deutch, a professor and former provost at MIT, reportedly had reached with the Justice Department over allegations that he had improperly stored classified materials on his home computer.

''The answer to the question, did we have any notice of the president's intention to give a pardon to John Deutch, or were we asked our opinion of the advisability of that, the answer to both questions is no,'' a senior intelligence official said Thursday.
