I think what Steve meant is that it is like standing naked in a National Forest in some canyon 20 miles from the trail head. In a sense, that is public nudity, but practically it isn't. You can't find any post on SI through Alta Vista anymore - they just don't index web pages in sites like this.

Imagine a small group huddled in the corner of a public park, whispering nasty things about you. Sure, that's "public", in the strictest sense of the word. Anybody who wants can sneak over to the corner and listen in on the whispers, or even join in if they choose. But is it something to get upset about?
