I'm sure you mean "shorting against the box". Actually "shorting against the block" is an very old mechanic's term for sparkplug wires shorting out against the engine block. Gotta be careful around here. Lots of know-it-alls.<g>

Problem with SATB is that it is not really shorting (you are just neutralizing your position) and it does nothing for you taxwise. I've done it myself for volatile issues that are in a trading range (OSX comes to mind). You try to scalp a point or two by legging in and legging out. It is usually not worth the effort and, as you know, it can be quite risky.

This article explains how it can also screw you up taxwise by resetting the clock on an imminent LTCG. The only place where it might work is when you have a STCG that you want to carry over to a new year and don't care about holding for LTCG.
