you're quite correct about the commercials. you can't use the COTs for precise timing though, and we'll have to watch closely what they're doing now. in '94 they stayed long throughout the one year trading range, and the market only took off in late Dec. that year. it's possible that they will stay short for quite a while before the market actually tanks to the next lower level - they may even change their mind. technically the market action is pretty convincing, as t/a indicators have worked the way they 'should have', i.e. no indicator failure thus far.

the DeBeers deal has nothing to do with AU. the DeBeers stake belongs to Anglo American (AAUK), the parent company of AU.
