Alan: The idea of "backward compatibility" of manganese oxide with lith-ion styled batteries wasn't discussed. It's a great question which I, given my level of battery technology knowledge, cannot answer.

I'd speculate it's not readily backward compatible but will bow to those professionals whose knowledge counts for more than mine.
