Well, it was a nice day, but NT decided to poop in the chili bowl. Yuck.

Nortel Networks (NT) 29.75 +0.20: -- Update -- Conference call ends. NT makes it clear that the unexpected weakness was primarily a US optical phenomenon -- says that carriers are investing in utilizing existing capacity but not looking at new routes until existing network is filled. Call is in stark contrast to the Ciena (CIEN) call this morning, but NT claims that it has not lost market share to competitors. Some analysts express skepticism that NT can make its Q2 and Q3 numbers given new revenue guidance, but NT says that headcount reduction will help to bring down fixed costs and that it can achieve full year EPS growth of 10%.

Here's another timely call with most of these stocks near 52 week lows....

14:49 ET CIBC Downgrades : CIBC World Markets out with a host of downgrades in the wireless/wireless components sectors (see 14:40 and 14:44 for specific cuts). The rating adjustments are based on checks performed by the firm that suggest worldwide wireless handset demand in the 475-528 mln range, a figure that is lower than is currently being indicated by OEMs and below consensus estimates.

14:44 ET Alpha Ind (AHAA) 26 3/4 -1/8 (-0.5%): CIBC World Markets also lowers AHAA to BUY from STRONG BUY.

14:40 ET CIBC Downgrades : CIBC World Markets downgrading TQNT, SAWS, ANEN, SMDI, and NOK to BUY from STRONG BUY. Firm lowers ERICY to HOLD from BUY.
