While looking at the stock price may be a bad idea if you're buying Nokia, I agree it's an even worse idea if you're going to buy Coke. But I'm old fashioned and can't get out of the habit, so I'm unable to buy either one of them right now.

Another failing of mine as a citizen of the New Age is my inability to use PE's based on "earnings" two years out. I understand that it goes a long way toward making things look cheaper, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

As for your assumption that 3G orders will follow from GPRS, it's a reasonable enough supposition, although there are plenty of variables which could throw a wrench in the whole thing. I certainly don't think it comes anywhere near the probability that, say, Coke will sell significantly more of their product 20 years from now than they do today. I don't see how someone investing in Nokia right now is being adequately compensated for the business risks over the next 5-10 years. That could just be because I don't understand the business well enough, but either way I'll just have to wait and hope the price comes down.

Tero,I think it's fair to assume that 80% of the GSM operators will place their 3G orders with their GPRS vendors

That is an assumption that vendors cannot afford to make. While it makes little sense to change vendors on GPRS upgrades (from the primary GSM vendor), there are multiple facets to selecting UMTS gear that have nothing to do with the preexising hardware be it GSM or GPRS.

Price, operator satisfaction or lack thereof with vendors and air interface performance are some. In addition, GPRS average throughput on live GSM networks is around 10 kb/s. Not anything to write home about. So the GPRS vendor may suffer from a latent image problem when comes to purporting to deliver higher rates.

Tero: Had to go back a long way to find a post from you on "your" thread.

But then, when you can do it for pay, why give it free.

Did enjoy reading your views on line for your day time job employer - which were excellent IMO - on current status of European status and "openings" to China (ah, the Nixon memories). And "your man" there would make Graham Greene proud.

Curious what you think of Nokia's prospects in China on both the old (GSM) and the new (CDMA).

Good luck in your on line endeavors.

(Still keep hoping for a touch, just a touch, of objectivity - would do wonders, wonders, for your credibility)

Best.
