Well I gave my Merriman-Webster Collegiate dictionary to my daughter when I got the new Webster's.
Thanks for the information. I don't have a brokerage account so I can't use it as a source.

In France I was surprised to see the word hypothèque (and its derivatives) in more or less every day use in the sense of putting up or pledging property as collateral against a loan (verb "hypothéquer"...)

This use is vaguely related to the word hypothesis when you think about it, something "underlying"...

The little Barron's Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms has the definition also. I find that little book very useful in deciphering some of the jargon one sees.
