Chief competition in this space will come from Nortel, which according to Nettles has linked its optical solutions too closely to its existing Sonet kit. "They're a tough competitor, but they're going to be hamstrung by not having the right products at the right time."

A major difference between Nortel and Ciena is that Nortel almost always sells its optical solution as part of an end to end solution which includes multi service switches and other hardware and software. An example today is their contract win in Germany with a cable company. They sold OPTera metro together with Passport switches and Succession server which allows the carrier to migrate from circuit switches to IP. Ciena does not have an end to end solution. Ciena's product appears to be a forklift project - not a smooth migration away SONET. Nettles does not like it when DWDM figures are lumped with SONET because the combined optical transport figures continue to show Nortel gaining market share in optical transport. The last Dell"Oro figures showed that and will show it again in March. Just my opinion.
