Moving the cache onboard was undoubtably very simple from a logic design viewpoint.

Not sure I agree there... the associativity pathways of the coppermine cache were completely new... granted, it's probably not quite as hard as adding an additional functional unit to the core, but my second point still stands that Northwood is not the lead 0.13 micron product...
