In addition to my last post, here is an article, a bit dated (1997, I don't think software quality has increased since then, I believe its decreased), and I don't think this is just isolated to WordPerfect. Any software install can potentially frick your system up:

You're absolutely correct about imaging your disk before installing software. So many bugs can be introduced by overwriting existing files with older versions. And when this happens, it's really tough to locate the trouble.

I couldn't begin to count the number of times I've been forced to revert to an image because some new software had unpleasant side-effects.
