<<Can someone please tell me if there is a way to change common shares to LEAPS without paying any taxes?>>

I don't know how you could go from a long stock position to long LEAPS without paying taxes on the sale of the stock. But you could raise cash by selling LEAPS against your stock (write a covered call) and not pay taxes until LEAPS expiration.

For example, with QCOM at about 85 you could sell the '02 LEAPS 60 Calls for $35 or the '03 LEAPS 70 Calls for $34. That is cash in your account now. You don't have pay tax on that until the LEAPS either expire worthless or are exercised in 1/02 or 1/03 respectively.
