The Nortel DWDM product is not directly linked to SONET just because Nettles implied that in his statement. Nortel not only has a viable DWDM solution but according to Dell'Oro, they are the market leader in DWDM. I guess at some point market share erosion was inevitable. At the very least, it makes it hard to grow the busines when you are leader...and this explains why CIENA is doing well and guiding upward.
