Statements from other sources about the U.S. economy in recent days seem to be focusing on the possibility of robust recovery in the
second half. Nortel, meanwhile, is pointing to doom and gloom for at least three quarters. Someone is out of step here!

Perhaps, you misunderstood Nortel's specific statement for what they expect to happen in each Q. During the Warning Conf Call, it was explicitly stated that the current and next Q will be the tough ones with accelerating growth during 3rd and 4th Q.

Not enough growth acceleration to make up for the first half...

Mike , as I stated earlier ALA has no exposure to circuit switching in US and in Europe Siemens and Ericsson are biger player in this area which is quickly declining in US, not in Europe.
ALA 75% of revenue is generated in fast growing markets (Europe mainly and Asia) where
in Nortel case it is only 35%.
Even N.American market (25%) for ALA is where the $ are going now : to fill the capacity (ATM+DSL).
Since ALA won Sprint recently and hinted about two others US optical deals coming soon. I am thinking if CIEN and ALA are not to some extend troubles maker for NT.

below are the links to real quote for ALA and

France's Alcatel Says It Maintains Outlook For Q1

PARIS -(Dow Jones)- French telecommunications equipment supplier Alcatel SA (ALA) said Friday that it maintains its revenue forecast for the first quarter despite growing signs of widespread gloom in the industry.

"We maintain our outlook for the first quarter," a spokesman at Alcatel said.

Alcatel's comment comes on the heels of a profit warning Thursday by Nortel Networks Corp. (NT).

Nortel issued the warning for the first quarter and the rest of the year due to a fall in sales primarily to North American-based carriers of optical transmission gear for long-haul networks and legacy circuit switch technology.

Last month, Alcatel Chairman Serge Tchuruk said he expects the group's revenues to grow nearer to the bottom of the 20% to 25% range.

Earlier, Alcatel lowered its revenue growth forecast for the year to between 20% and 25%, from a target of more than 25%.
