Fallope: The LT "Buy and Hold" crowd will have capital gains taxes to pay, and they'll sell current losers to pay their taxes, generating tax write-offs for next year. I may be wrong, but... I think the combination of: (1) earnings warning season for Q1 2001; (2) dismal earnings reports from tech stocks in Q1 2001, which will show the magnitude of the tech recession we are in the midst of; (3) worries about the March Fed meeting and whether Greenspan will continue rate cuts past the March FOMC meeting; and, (4) concerns that we may NOT have a recovery in the tech sector this year (read or listen to the Nortel conference call, in this regard) may gave us a better buying opportunity for selected tech stocks.

With reagrd to #3, Greenspan seems to be indicating that he thinks the economy is not as weak as he thought 1 or 2 months ago, which will raise concerns that he may not cut rates as much as everyone would like. If forthcoming economic data over the next 2-3 weeks support this, then rate cuts after March will not be a slam-dunk.
