It has been abundantly demonstrated, in recent years, that arms are in no way necessary to overthrow a repressive government. I'm not convinced that the theoretical ability of an armed populace to restrain a repressive government outweighs the possibility that the same armed populace may use those arms against other citizens.

Sure, I've heard of the Boston Tea Party. That one worked out well enough in the long run. Others didn't. Do you think that Southern slave owners were justified in taking up arms to defend their self-evident right to hold others in slavery?
