Actually, I think MD and spokespersons were cornered and asked point blank to comment on the speculation. When you are asked by the media, there is nothing that can be said from nothing to "no comment" to "we don't comment on rumors" that won't be perceived as denial. And as I've mentioned, you just can come clean on something like this if your'e smart. I think they did the right thing.

As for the deal space I agree. But I bristle at the suggestion by the analyst community that Dell should buy Gateway. They are toast anyway and their market share will be up for grabs. Dell would get more for their money buying Apple. They at least have a hoard of cash and gobs of patents. But that will never happen. And, Dell being the totally risk averse management team that they are, probably won't acquire anything. But the long speculated "deal" with IBM has merit and Dell would most likely do something here if anywhere.

I didn't read MD's refusal to speculate on a rumor of layoffs as a denial, and I don't see how it could have been objectively seen as one.
