Well, that is true enough, but there is another way of looking at it. The tensions, disagreements, and idiosyncracies of American society as it evolves are reflected in politics. Politics makes a difference in working through some of these issues, but less than one expects. Look at what happened in the former Soviet Union or Yugoslavia. After all the effort to switch allegiances to each federation, most of the national entities bailed at the first opportunity. After all of the propaganda for atheism, the churches, synagogues, and mosques experience a stunning revival. After all the anti- capitalist rhetoric, business, both legitimate and illegitimate, arose. It was almost as if the intervening years of Communism were erased, and everyone picked up where they left off.......
