for now, as a personal user, all you can do is lock the doors. that and educate yourself as to the threat. the locks (firewalls) are deterrents, but not fail safes. they say if a hacker wants in, he can usually get in. the key (pun intended) seems to be to make someone else look like a better target by making yourself difficult to deal with.
