Coleman has been introducing some good small personal models in the 1500-2500 watt range. The units are fairly light and mobile. They have a 2 cycle with ceramic magnets that is VERY portable and quite powerful. There are several producers in the home powering range (5,000-10,000 watts).

That being said I don't think gasoline engine generators are a good long term solution. Home fuel cells are the answer as far as I am concerned. Much more efficient, cleaner, no noise, can be used as a heat source. Mitsubishi recently introduced the first home unit but it is quite pricey. I figure 3-5 years from now you will be seeing them in your local Home Depot or Lowes store.
