Perhaps Washington's experience is why the phrase "well regulated" was inserted.

For a contrary view you might consider this book review:

Spiking the Gun Myth , by Gary Wills, a review of Arming America : The Origins of a National Gun Culture. By Michael A. Bellesiles.

For an inaccurate point a view I might consider that book. His source material contains information to refute his
own arguments. Also to an extent I consider it irrelevant. Even If guns where not common in the past in the US (and they were), it would not change our constitutional right to own them.

Wills and Bellesiles are both toast. Both hacks, both fabulators.
