Richard: Don't forget Goldfields is fighting for its life against Anglo, which is aided and abetted by Barrick. Anglo is also very, very cozy with the SA government, especially now, after the DeBeers deal. iol.co.za

Thinking back, I have no doubt that Trevor Manuel, the SA Finance Minister, stopped the merger of Goldfields with Franco/Nevado so that Anglo could pick it up when the time was ripe.

So, Goldfields wants to value itself as high as possible so that Anglo has to pay through the nose if it wants to grab it.

This paragraph is also very important : "We thought this was an opportune time to close out the last of our hedges, given the current weakness in the gold price, >>> which we believe is not sustainable <<<," said Thompson.

These are very interesting times.
