Yes regretfully people (the overly optimistis) tend to think of stock prices as just numbers, and that is why I am totally against companies doing a split of their stock. At today's close of $23/shr, SUNW would have been $184/shr if no splits had been done since 1997.

However regretfully also what people (the overly pessimists) seem to overlook is that the revenues and earnings have also gone up dramatically that the stock deserves to be at least $190/shr to $195/shr - in 1997 time tube. (IMHO of course).

Anyway, As for your WIntel theory, I am afraid that has also failed and will continue to fail as has been the case with DOTCOMS. Think Linux my friend, open source, and freely available OS with people being able to personalize/customize the underlying code,, in addition to all the software - again open source - that would be running on it. I am afraid both Microsoft and Sun may have gotten it wrong (more Microsoft than Sun perhaps in the short term anyway). The big winner is IBM who seems to have the 2 of them by their neck (to say it mildly).

Anyway... yes the dotcoms can be blamed for everything that is going on right now next to Mr. Greenspan and the economic model he used last October which stopped him from cutting the rates by half a point then.

Remember those "we put the dot in the dot.com" commercials? Looking back in hindsight that had to be one of the stupidest ad campaigns they could have run. Talk about tarnishing your brand...

I work at a computer services company and Solaris or NT are the only two OS's we recommend to clients. For industrial strength performance Sun is the way to go and will be for years...
