When I was in medic training in the army we'd take rubbing alcohol bottles and after thoroughly cleaning them fill them with Ever Clear, straight grain alcohol. In the evening we'd put the alcohol on IV drip bags, stock up on soft drinks and sit on the floor. Our own little flowing tube to spike the Cokes. On day a tough kid out of St. Louis showed us how a real man drinks. He took a swig right out of the bottle. I thought we were going to have to fire up an ambulance for the "tough guy".

I was snorkeling in Puerto Escondido and a wave caught and tossed me toward the rocks. I kicked to get myself away- -right into a sea urchin. I started swimming for shore and looked back. I was leaving a clear trail of blood in the water. I made it up to the beach and started hopping towards shore; I couldn't walk on the injured foot. There was a small thatch-hut bar on the beach and the bartenders saw me and came out to help me out of the water. Then one of them ran back to the bar and came back with four shots of mescal- -three to drink and one to pour on my foot as disinfectant. I downed the three shots and soon was feeling no pain. Great stuff! No pain, that is, until the doctor they took me to started cutting out the spines without anesthetic; he didn't have any.
