i think you are confusing the specific term: optical switch
with an electro-optical switch. the latter have been around for some time now. William Hunt cited an article by Scott Moritz which said "The company lacks an optical switch>" plus words to the effect that nt had missed that market. he drew a parallel with lu missing the the 10 Gbp/s market, which is nonsense. as i said, and as you said in so many words: no one has an optical switch yet, so there's no market to miss. lu, in missing the OC-192 market, began to die.
HDX is indeed an optical cross-connect, part of nt's Optera packet suite. and Xros, acquired in March of 2000 is hot on the all optical switch:
