Zoltan Kodaly: Re: "Helping US out of the Clinton-Gore recession and stagflation." Laugh. Guffaw. Slap my knee. That's a good one. I'd suggest that you compare your portfolio now compared to 1992. Unless, that is, your financial handicapping skills match your political analysis skills.

The Bush executive orders to give Big Business more leverage vs. the common working man and common working woman were highly anticipated. Sorry, no big news here. The President Select and his minions are fervant anti-common working man, but I lost no sleep last night. Zzzzzzzzzzz. Zzzzzzzzzz.

By the way, an organization that styles itself as the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation reported yesterday that "President Bush's imminent executive order would only be a small -- and largely symbolic -- first step."

It also should be pointed out that enforcement of the Beck decision, according to the NRWLDF, "only affects a small segment of the 12 million American employees compelled to pay union dues as a condition of employment, as it just requires federal contractors to inform workers of their Beck rights by posting workplace notices."

Ring again when you have something important to report on the labor front, will you?

Re: "The White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Bush believes unionized and nonunion contractors should compete for federal projects, and that the change could save taxpayers money...."

That's a good buzz term: "Save money for taxpayers." OK, so when are we going to move on to corporate welfare under the D-Dubya-I administration, so that ALL companies must pay even a LITTLE federal income tax. What?! We're not?! Oh my! (Hint: If you want to know why, just follow the Big Business big money trail to the Republican Party.)

Have a nice day.

I am cautiously pro trade union, but sometimes they get ridiculous, just like any other human endeavor. When I worked at the Exxon Refinery on Powerformer 1 and Powerformer 2, which are each the size of several city blocks, the union (Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers - OCAW) made management put in a women's locker room at both units, even though I was the only woman, for safety reasons. I was very grateful for that twice, once when a benzene pump seal blew and I got benzene sprayed all over me, and once when a pipe carrying lye broke and sprayed caustic chemicals all over me. I was able to shower quickly and change into my spare clothes without having to walk half a mile covered in chemicals.

But when I went to work in the printing industry, I didn't join the union because as an apprentice, I was only allowed to work under the supervision of a journeyman, and there was no journeyman on the night shift. The union rep on the day shift tried to get me to join but someone pointed out that if I joined I'd have to quit my job! At that time, Louisiana had put in right-to-work laws so I didn't join the union and kept working.
