In the folder you had the file in go to view / folder options tab / view tab / and put a dot in the show all files circle. You can reset all folders to be like this one by using the Like Current Folder button. Then "ok" your way back out. Word of warning: this setting is fine for you because you know all files are displayed. If someone else uses your machine you run the risk of them deleting or altering a system file or a file necessary to run a particular application. This could cause major headaches.

In Explorer, click View, select Folder options..., View tab. Put the dot in Show all files. Click Apply button.

In Explorer, click View, Refresh.

Hidden folders and files will display dimmed. You can set their properties as you wish.
