Great post about estate taxes, and I read Taggert's reply, he is the essence of the totally mindless readership on this board

There might be an easier solution to the estate tax "problem" that arguing about every possible variation from -0- tax to total confiscation. If an estate was treated as capital gains to the recipient(s) after a suitable floor deduction, say raise the $675k to $1,000k and adjust annually for cost-of-living increases. And maybe a formula could be worked out to allow an extended time to pay the taxes. Family owned businesses might not have to be sold just to pay the estate taxes.

I personally don't have a dog in this fight; there is nobody left to leave me anything and I don't have anything to leave. But I would like to see some informed discussion either way so I can learn something. I am just a lower income, <$20k, senior not yet retired. But my children now approaching middle age may be interested in passing something on to their kids.

Thanking anyone in advance for responding,

Chas

Dear Ecommerceman: Just read your posts and since I skip around to interesting posts I must admit I am NOT SURE just where you come down on Estate Taxes BUT I want to stress AGAIN to this board, AND I SPEAK FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE, this BS about eliminating esate taxes will ONLY favor 650 megamillionaire families is BOGUS. THOSE FAMILIES are currently NOT paying any estate tax and NEVER WILL. How can I prove it? OK, KENNEDY'S, ROCKAFELLERS, MELLONS you see those DYNASTIES DISAPPAITING through estate taxes?? No, there are plenty of LEGAL ways to avoid estate taxes BUT it takes BIG BUCKS to pull it off. So, whether you are for or against estate taxes please everyone DO NOT BE BLINDED by CLASS WARFARE RHETORIC as to why we SHOULDNT eliminate it. JDN
