ecommerceman,

It strikes me that a number of folks have responded with experience of a personal nature. Does it change your mind or influence you?

Before you answer, I would also like to say the tone of this so far has been more or less civil (though not perfectly so), let's keep it that way, eh boys?

Yet, curiously, nobody here has said they don't believe in any taxes whatsoever (except you, sarcastically. I said specifically that I do not mind paying reasonable taxes). And nobody here has proclaimed themselves a millionaire (including me). And nobody here has come across as an avuncular, cigar chomping, yacht piloting, JP Morgan have they? And yet virtually all participants are against the inheritance tax.

Do you wonder if your sense of perspective is askew, or perhaps that you may be unfairly characterising your audience?

Just curious.

I start with the radical assumption that the government needs funds to operate
Duh. I never would have guessed. Thank you SO MUCH for telling ME!
The question is how much. And before that the question is "What are the legitimate functions of government?"
Is socialized medicine (which we are drifting into) a legitimate function? I think not.
Is national defense? Absolutely.
Kill off the illegitimate functions and you won't need excessive taxes.
Of course, that means some Washington bureaucrats- -actually, a lot of them- -will have to get real jobs.
And that's why
"So what government department do you work in?"
is a legitimate question.

What possible difference does it make where I work?
Ever hear of vested interest?
