Hi Poet,

Thanks for the head's up on the bankruptcy legislation. I'm sure it'll get logrolled through eventually, but maybe our side will get something of value in return.

Not to change the subject abruptly.... Talk about fairness and democratic process in the Internet, I read yesterday that ICANN was too decide on seven new top level domain names, things like .com, .org., .edu, etc. One that was presented and was rejected by the ICANN poohbahs was .union. This is really galling to me. It should be noted by all that ICANN does not represent the interests of the people. Operating, when it can, behind closed doors, it is a tool of venal corporate interests and deserves as much vilification as we can heap upon it. Should any here be interested, I can provide more detail about how the Internet is being hijacked by the same cabal that sees no problem with selling your name and personal data to the highest bidding spammers (Verisign/Network Solutions). Grrr. These people are turning our best shot at a brilliant future and turning it into a targeted advertising opportunity. What a dreadful thing the human race can be when it puts its mind to it.

Just to further piss off the free market zealots who are lurking here, I've recently been reading about the City of Chicago's efforts to socialize the Internet. Here's the URL:
chicagocivicnet.net
This initiative is the boldest step yet by any North American city to provide fair access to the broadband future to all its businesses and citizens. Similar, though far smaller efforts are underway in Palo Alto and in Montreal. CANARIE, a wonderful research organization:
connect.gc.ca
is involved with Mayor Daley and his technology team and are coming up with a wonderful plan for cabling the entire city. Rumor in the industry is that Ameritech is most likely going to be shut out, if the government team can keep down the litigators who will insist on pushing the city around in the courts.

For those foolish camp followers of the free market who haven't had enough angst about us lefties yet, you might want to read up on this view of the California energy "crisis".

Very level headed, not very friendly to Kenneth Lay, Spence Abrams and their cabal of manipulators and market riggers. Sorry.

FWIW, Ray :)
