Acer Labs gets Pentium 4 licence
TAIPEI, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Taiwan microchip designer Acer Laboratories Inc's share price surged on Monday on news that the company had been licenced by Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) to make chipsets for the U.S. firm's Pentium 4 processor.

Acer Labs' over-the-counter shares rose by T$4.00, or the seven percent daily limit, to close at T$67.50 despite a 2.24 percent drop in the TAISDAQ (^TWOII - news) index.

Acer Labs, a member of the Acer Group technology conglomerate, said in a statement it was the first Taiwan firm to win a licence to design chipsets for Intel's speedy new Pentium 4 processor.

It did not elaborate on the deal for the licence.

The company's competitors in the business of designing chipsets, which allow a computer's microprocessor brain to communicate with the rest of the system, include VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SIS) .

VIA gained T$6.00 to close at T$332.00 while SIS gave up T$3.00 to T$50.00.

Acer Labs did not say if its chipsets would use memory chip technology from Rambus Inc (NasdaqNM:RMBS - news), which Intel is trying to bring into the mainstream despite complaints that it is too expensive, or slower but less pricey double data rate memory technology.

Intel's in-house Pentium 4 chipsets employ memory chips with Rambus technology.
